Harvesting Feeds with FME Server
I've been a huge fan of FME for many years and have been a beta user of FME Server for over a year. Most of the projects I'm currently involved with include some RSS, KML, or GeoRSS output for spatial data, there always seems to be a desire to spatial information across platforms. For aggregating feeds, things like Mapufacture are awesome. However if I want to control the aggregated feeds and combine them in new ways or create new file types FME Server is the way to go.
While I'm a huge fan of both TileCache and GeoWebCache I've been exploring ways to harvest WMS images from remote servers using FME Server . Until we build out the capabilities of GeoServer and GeoNetwork as robust data storage and retrieval platforms, we can harvest features or images locally for display on Google Maps, VE or OpenLayers. The hope behind this is to reduce some of the network latency when calling remote WMS servers or else to enable platforms such as Open Layers to work with local data in a semi-connected environment (such as in parts Africa or any where else without the North American wireless infrastructure). This seems to initially be working, hopefully the Sever training next month will help with some of this.
